TURN Gallery is pleased to present AMONG FLOWERS, a group exhibition with artists Eve Ackroyd, Li Jun, Karyn Lyons, Andy Mister, and Alessandro Teoldi.
Flowers say what words cannot. They grant us expressions of emotion, from the regret of “I am sorry” to the joy of “I love you.” Flowers signal the changing seasons, act as symbols of beauty and power, offer homeopathic cures, and illuminate our homes. AMONG FLOWERS celebrates the work of five figurative artists and their independent methods of storytelling from realism to the surreal. Through a synthesis of elaborate still lifes and finespun gestures of blooms, these artists’ multifaceted narratives collectively stimulate our senses with the seduction of flowers.
Eve Ackroyd, using distinctive bold fields of color, explores how our bodies negotiate the worlds of physical space and memory alike. She depicts women in intensely personal situations that evoke wider contexts. Ackroyd’s most recent solo exhibition was Fifth Floor Apartment in the Parlour Room at Turn Gallery. She has been included in two-person and group exhibitions at Assembly Room, New York; Cob Gallery, London; Cindy Rucker Gallery, New York; White Columns, New York. Eve Ackroyd lives and works in London.
Li Jun reconfigures realistic space and matter to form uncharted hypnotic environments. Common objects such as bowls, vases, sinks, and teeth are released from their typically prescribed restrictions, evoking a destabilizing sense of time and place and igniting the desire to explore. Her recent solo exhibitions include Cabinet of Curiosities in the Parlour Room of TURN Gallery, New York and Half and Half at PJ Gallery in Shenzhen, China. Previous group exhibitions include the Shanghai Youth Art Exhibition and Animation Art Biennial at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, China. Li Jun lives and works in Changsha, China.
Karyn Lyons draws upon her experience as a young woman as she revisits the interiority of her teenage years, uncovering longing and loneliness, as well as private pleasures. Lyons explores the yearning and fantasies of adolescence, often complicated by family secrets tucked into the corners of seemingly perfect interiors. Karyn Lyons’s most recent solo exhibition was Under the Spell at TURN Gallery. Recent group exhibitions include Sim Smith, London; Stems Gallery, Brussels, Belgium; Spazio Amanita, Los Angeles, CA; Friends Indeed Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Philips Hong Kong; The Journal, East Hampton, NY; Fredericks & Freiser, New York, NY; Galleria Annarumma, Naples, Italy; TURN Gallery, New York. Karyn Lyons lives and works in New York City.
Andy Mister, working with images appropriated from contemporary and vintage photographs, investigates the boundary between mechanical and manual reproduction and questions how meaning is created or lost through the act of ‘copying.’ Andy Mister has an upcoming solo exhibition at Lowell Ryan Projects in Los Angeles, CA. Recent solo exhibitions include Rebecca Camacho Presents, San Francisco, CA; Commune Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; TURN Gallery, New York. He has been included in group exhibitions at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Morgan Lehman Gallery, Joshua Liner Gallery, Dieu Donné, Lesley Heller Workspace, and The National Arts Club. Andy Mister lives and works in Beacon, NY.
