TURN Gallery is pleased to present TEN SENTENCES, an exhibition of artists Ariel Dill, Fabienne Lasserre, and Mason Saltarrelli, opening on Thursday, May 5th. Dill, Lasserre, and Saltarrelli glean forms exclusive to their individual techniques and simultaneously speak a crystal clear language of self-editing. Circumnavigating excess, abstraction undone opens an invitation to close looking, composing space for the viewer to reflect by way of the artist’s meditation.

“It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Dill’s imagery expresses a movement between abstraction and representation, figuration and graphic flatness, the imagined and the observed. As the viewer’s eye wanders across the canvas, shallow visual spaces and graphic forms give way to expansive vistas. From landscapes to seascapes her calligraphic marks are animated by a rippling energy, conveying multiple interpretations. Dill builds up areas of transparent paint, punctuated by opaque shapes, choreographing the freedom of imagination, from one thought to the next.

Lasserre’s abstract paintings and sculptures merge the tactile with the visual. Her pieces speak of an “excluded middle,” the part that is left out when things are divided into categories. Creating object-like painted planes of color that choreograph the viewers’ gaze and motion through space, her pieces activate a poetic and expansive relation to the world: imaginative, political, intuitive, analytical, physical, emotional – all at once.

Saltarrelli navigates connections between mortality and spirit by utilizing a collection of found narrative symbols. Painting and drawing expressively—his intuition articulates continuing, woven motifs inviting open-ended exploration from the viewer. Saltarrelli’s work transforms inanimate, human and animal beings into buoyant remembrances in an ever-evolving examination of shape and color.
