TURN Gallery is pleased to present Andy Mister in Brighten the Corners, opening September 10th, 2025. This marks his third exhibition with the gallery. The show takes its title from Pavement’s 1997 album— a pivotal album Mister purchased in his youth that continues to inform his listening— and reflects his ongoing dialogue between the personal, the cultural, and the everyday.
In this new body of work Mister has waded into a deeper intimacy. Expanding his technique of pastel on linen, he now layers fluid acrylic washes onto unprimed linen before drawing over them with pastel—a process which distills a balletic atmospheric and conjures a “soft realism.” The term nods to Barbara Guest’s Fair Realism, and positions his current work in contrast to the hard edges of his earlier graphic black-and-white paper works.
After moving with his family to Binghamton, NY, Mister rented an upstairs apartment which fittingly doubled as both studio and satellite living space to create this collection of domestic scenes. On each canvas Mister imbues conventional objects—art books shared with his wife, gleaming candles, mason jars used in place of traditional candle holders or vases and flowers—with a breath of romanticism, turning them into something acutely precious and beautiful. Whereas the bouquets in his previous exhibitions were ornately curated, the floral arrangements here are small clippings or the remains of a bouquet; personally formed and uniquely elegant in their stripped simplicity.
While Mister’s earlier work engaged with how popular culture and historical currents shape individuals, as he finds his life becoming more hectic, the focus of Brighten the Corners is grounded in his daily existence. Through this exploration of the quotidian, Mister finds light in the darkness and brightness in every corner. Still, nostalgia seeps through the cracks. References to popular culture are alluded to in the titles of the pieces themselves. In the process of making these works, he thought of Jane Freilicher, Joe Brainard, and Gregory Gillespie, who likewise found subject matter close at hand, and continue to illuminate Mister’s path.
