KATHRYN LYNCH & PAUL INGLIS
MARCH 2 - APRIL 14, 2019
TURN Gallery presents Stars in Our Pockets bringing together Brooklyn based painter Kathryn Lynch and Boston based artist Paul Inglis. In this exhibition, these two artists explore waterways and cityscapes as the impetus for painting. From the flickering of twilight to the rays of dawn, it is in these transitioning moments that Lynch and Inglis are ripe with discovery.
Intrinsic to their daily practice — time spent walking, observing, sketching, painting — these artists move beyond the landscape, investigating their distinct visual vocabulary and emotional interests. Although different in scale and approach, they equally employ the use of color as a vehicle for emotional response.
For Inglis, shrinking and abstracting his world down to the essentials is key. Buildings, boats and cityscapes are stripped down to geometric shapes wrapped only in color. Small scale, vividly painted cardstock is often cut up and rhythmically reassembled across the picture frame. Brush strokes are layered which result in cloud-like washes that blur the liminal space between memory and reality.
Lynch hovers between realism and abstraction. A tug of war between light and space, she captures scenes of fleeting moments that are pressed through the reassuring materiality of paint. From the shores of Eastern Long Island, to Manhattan and Brooklyn cityscapes, Lynch renders scenes that are a metaphor and balm for the passing of time. Tapping into the unconscious, she looks to reveal the solitary traveler in each of us.
Kathryn Lynch received her undergraduate degree from Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and an MFA at the University of Pennsylvania, PA. Recent solo exhibitions include Sears Peyton Gallery, New York, NY, and Tayloe Piggott Gallery, Jackson Hole, WY. She has participated in several group exhibitions across the U.S. Lynch’s works are featured in many corporate and public collections. In 2018, she was awarded the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship. Lynch currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Paul Inglis received his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA. Solo exhibitions in New York were held at TURN Gallery in 2018 and 2016. Inglis has participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Boston area. Inglis lives and works in Somerville, MA.
