TURN Gallery is pleased to present Josh Jefferson’s first solo exhibit. Head First is a selection of Jefferson’s portraits which invite us to unlearn what we see in mirrors and examine the masks we create for ourselves. Whether a few loose strokes or intricate layers of paint, ink and splatter, Jefferson’s paintings elicit a raw sophistication. The layers in each painting can’t be viewed at once because no single layer dominates. They feed back on themselves in an intricate loop which fluctuates from viewing to viewing. Jefferson is a distinct draftsman, yet his skill lies in his ability to balance abandon and control. His tactile materials support each other and at the same time pull free with fierce independence. The exhibition includes his canvasses as well as works on paper.
